A Light Along the Way

Dear Diary

This morning Father LeRoy’s voice filled St. Mary’s with such warmth, even though the sky outside was dim and gray. He told us that when life feels uncertain, we are not to be troubled, because God lights our path one step at a time. He said that like lanterns in the dark, we are only shown enough light to take the next few steps, but that is all we really need.

Sister Mary Claire leaned down and whispered that faith is not about seeing the whole road, but trusting that God walks with us as we go. I liked that. Mini seemed to nod as if she understood too, sitting right by my shoes, her little ears twitching when the church bell rang.

On the way home, the gravel was still wet from the night’s rain, and puddles shone with little reflections of the sky. Mini leapt over each puddle like a circus acrobat, which made Sister and me laugh. Father LeRoy walked a ways with us, carrying his hat in his hand, and he told us he prays every evening for his parishioners by name. That made me feel safe and very loved.

Now as I sit by the lamp with Mini curled up on my lap, Sister is reading softly, her voice like a lullaby. The day has ended gently, like a candle burning low.

Evening Prayer

O Lord,

Lead me kindly through the dimness of this day’s end.
Though the night stretches long, I will not fear,
For Your light shines enough for my next step.
Keep my heart steady when shadows grow,
And guide me home until the morning breaks.

Love, Kathy
