Cold Morning, Warm Hearts

Dear Diary,

It was the coldest morning yet—only 39 degrees when I peeked out the window! A silvery frost lay across the pasture like a thin lace blanket, glittering just enough to make everything look touched by light. I could see my breath on the glass, and the sky was pale gray-blue, waiting for the first stretch of sun. I bundled up in my warmest coat while Sister Mary Claire fastened hers and tucked Mini’s blanket under her arm. When we stepped outside, the frost crackled faintly under our shoes, and Mini’s nose went straight to sniffing. Then, just as we reached the gate, Robert’s pickup came chugging up the lane, the little puff of exhaust curling into the cold air. Mini wagged her whole bottom and jumped eagerly, and I gave her a little boost up into the warm cab.

Robert already had the new heater going full blast, and Sister Mary Claire said it felt like “a little slice of heaven.” Mini curled up on my lap and sighed happily as we rolled toward St. Mary’s. By the time we arrived, the sun had climbed over the trees, and the frost had started to melt into tiny drops that sparkled along the fence posts.

Father LeRoy already had the church stove glowing bright red. The first wave of warmth met us right at the door, and the windows began to fog from the inside. The old plaster walls still held a bit of chill, but the fire soon chased it away.

Today’s Gospel was from St. Luke, about how the Pharisees warned Jesus that Herod wanted to kill Him. Father LeRoy said Jesus wasn’t afraid because He was following His Father’s plan, and His love couldn’t be stopped. He spoke of how Jesus longed to gather His people, just like a hen gathers her chicks under her wings. I thought of Omelette on the farm, clucking softly as her little ones tuck beneath her feathers. I suppose that’s how Jesus wants us—to feel safe and warm beneath His care.

After Mass, Robert said the pickup’s heater made it “a fine day for a frosty morning.” He dropped us off with his usual friendly wave, and Mini barked in reply. By then, the sun was shining bright, and the last bits of frost had melted into the grass, leaving everything fresh and glistening.

Evening Prayer:

Dear Jesus, thank You for Your love that warms even the coldest days. Keep us safe under Your care tonight, and help me stay close to You always.

Amen.

Love,
Kathy
