Through the Narrow Gate

Dear Diary,

This morning started at 41 degrees, but you wouldn’t have known it by how warm everything felt. Father LeRoy had the church stove going good and toasty by the time we got there, and it smelled a little like hickory and beeswax candles. I even took my coat off during Mass! Robert picked us up as usual in his pickup, and Mini jumped in after he gave her a boost. She made herself right at home on Sister Mary Claire’s lap. Robert had a grin and said, “Got the heater fixed—brand new one! Feels like Florida in here now.” It surely did. The windows fogged up right away, and I drew a little heart on mine.

The Gospel reading was from Luke 13:22–30, where Jesus talks about the narrow gate. Father LeRoy said it means that getting to Heaven isn’t about just knowing Jesus’ name or going through the motions, but really living the way He taught us—being kind when it’s hard, forgiving even when we don’t feel like it, and loving God with all our heart. He said that trying to fit through the narrow gate means we can’t bring along pride or selfishness; we have to leave those things behind. He smiled and said the narrow gate might be small, but it opens into a Kingdom full of joy.

After chores, Sister Mary Claire and I had a cup of hot milk with honey and read by the fire while Mini snoozed by my feet. The air outside has that chilly October quiet where even the geese seem tired.

Evening Prayer:

Dear Jesus, help me walk the narrow path with You each day.
Keep my heart kind and my thoughts gentle.
And when I’m tired, remind me You’re near.

Amen.

Love,

Kathy
